Emotional Song Pact (契絆想界詩, keihansoukaishi?) is one of the two fictional languages employed in the Surge Concerto series. It is the official language used for communication between humans and Genoms, and thus, is also the language employed when the humans need to use Song Magic alongside a Genom they have Synchronized with. Due to this, while the language has enough features to support a normal conversation, no one uses it for anything except for the casting of Song Magic. Additionally, due to its nature of only working for casting magic alongside a Genom, all Song Magic that makes use of it without the support of a Cielnotron or the Surge Concerto Terminal, and thus without the REON-4213 programming language, receives the name of Hymmn.[1]
Writing[]
The Emotional Song Pact language uses a very complex writing system: while on the surface it only seems to be a substitution cypher for the Latin alphabet like the writing systems for Hymmnos and Ar Ciela, that is only the case for writing loanwords. The words unique to the language itself have a special writing system akin to that of the Korean Hangul: each word is separated in syllables, and the letters that form them are grouped into clusters. During the grouping, the letters can be rotated and change sizes, making it hard for a beginner to understand how to read and write it.
Officially, the development staff at Gust Inc. use a special program to write the parts in the Emotional Song Pact font in order to create the letter clusters, which can be accessed through the official Wiki located in the genomirai.com website. There are also an unofficial program that also creates the clusters through bitmaps, an unofficial font and dictionary and font file that makes use of Windows' EUDC feature to write the clusters. The unofficial font is readily available at this very Wiki, as it is used to display the letter clusters properly.[2] The letters that form the Emotional Song Pact alphabet in their normal (standalone) forms can be seen in the image below:
Note how there is no distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters.

Numerals[]
Emotional Song Pact uses a hexadecimal system for its numbers, therefore its numerals go from 0 to 15.
Letter Clusters[]
The letter clusters used in the Emotional Song Pact writing can be formed by two, three or four letters, with each of these numbers having up to a total of three different possible patterns. If a word or syllable is composed by five or more letters, it will be broken down into two separate clusters instead of being written as a single one. However, it must be noted that the rules stating which pattern should be used for a specific letter combination still haven't been officially established.
The currently known cluster types and their reading methods are shown below:
Two Letter Clusters[]
The two letter clusters have only two different patterns, which are the horizontal and vertical ones:
Horizontal Pattern[]
In this pattern, the glyphs are positioned horizontally next to each other, and they are read from right to left.
Vertical Pattern[]
In this pattern, the glyphs are stacked in a column, and are read from bottom to top.
Three Letter Clusters[]
Three letter clusters have a total of three possible patterns, making them the group of clusters with the largest amount of variations.
Pattern 1[]
In this pattern, the glyphs are placed in a triangular formation, and are read first from up to down, and then from right to left.
Pattern 2[]
The glyphs take a triangular formation similarly to the previous pattern, but their reading order is instead from right to left, and then from bottom to top.
Pattern 3[]
All glyphs are stacked in a column, and are read from bottom to top.
Four Letter Clusters[]
The final type of cluster, this is the one that has the largest possible number of combinations. However, it only has two possible patterns.
Pattern 1[]
The first three glyphs are positioned horizontally next to each other, while the fourth and final one is placed above them all. It's read from right to left, and then from bottom to top.

The first glyph is placed at the bottom, the second and third glyphs are placed above it, and the fourth and final glyph is placed above them all. The reading for this pattern is from bottom to up, and from right to left.

What kind of language is it?[]
It should be obvious just from looking at it.
Take a glance at the following example:
We can say it's a kanji-like language in which a single glyph can be given readings like [fei] or [rar].
This particular sentence would translate to:
Ruray and Tabou saved me, so please don't let them die!
And translating it literally, we would get:
Which means the word order for it is identical to the one used in Japanese.
The [don't let them die!] part seems to be the most complicated one, but we'll explain it in detail later.
The Traits that Made it into the Genoms' Official Language[]
This language is used as the main method of communication between the Genoms.
Even in the timeframe in which the games are set, Genoms use it to communicate among themselves.
By the way, the bodies (and minds) of Genoms and normal humans have some different properties from each other.
It's due to this that it might be slightly hard for the humans to grasp the concept of [methods for expressing the being called "oneself"].
What we mean is that in this case, we have the special characteristic of the [oneself] changing depending on certain situations.
In the case of the humans, we call ourselves the [self] or better said [I], as we don't have any other different conditions.
But in the case of the Genoms, there are other situations aside of the meaning the humans give to the self, as there are cases in which the self is them and their host (a human), or them when they are with another Genom.
These are the conditions the Genoms call [Synchronization], [Perfect Synchronization] and [Chain], and since these are what we could call the result of a fusion of sorts, their definition of self changes whenever they are under one of these conditions.
Like it's shown in the diagram above, the word used to say [I] changes depending on one's current condition.
Genoms use the word [ah] when they are talking about themselves, while the humans in turn use the word [ih] to do the same.
When a human and a Genom are maintaining a Synchronization, the word changes to [ahih] to denote they have their two minds connected as if they were a single being.
And for the stages of Perfect Synchronization and above, it goes back to [ah]. This is because they truly have fused into a single being, but it also has deeper meanings.
And while it isn't shown in the diagram, when fellow Genoms are in a condition called a Chain (fellow Genoms connecting their minds as if they were a single one), the words used to refer to oneself change to [ahih-cyen (Synchronization)] and [ah-cyen (Perfect Synchronization and above)].
It's by this way of expressing the self that the current Genoms can know in which condition they currently are.
Basic Grammar[]

In order to understand how sentences are structured in this language, it'll be far simpler if you pay attention to this particular point.
All sentences have the structure [A] (emotion words) topic marker (leading words).
At this point, we can say that [B] (the Leading Words) are the core of this language.
The conjugations are what makes [B] what it is, but for now we'll disassemble the [A] and [B] parts in detail.
Put it simply, let's translate the following sentences:

Core Words and Conjugations[]
There aren't any sort of [verbs], [adjectives], [adverbs] or any other word categories in this language.
They all are called [Core Words], and they can all be subdivided into categories such as [Verbal-Adjectival Core Words] and [Noun Core Words].
Put simply, if we have a sentence ending in [is ○○], the Core Words would be the ○○ part, being able to also become [verbs] and [adjectives].
Core Words are defined by placing [conjugations] after normal nouns.
This point might be the easiest to imagine to those versed in the Japanese language:
[Death] is turned into the verb [to die] by writing the kanji for "death" [死] with the hiragana ぬ to form [死ぬ], while [food] is turned into the verb [to eat] by adding the hiragana [べる] to the kanji for food [食], pretty much making the formula [noun + letters = verb].
The same applies to adjectives, like for example the kanji for [light] (軽) becoming an adjective by adding the hiragana い after it to form [軽い].
But even if we use the same 死 kanji, we could change it to past form by conjugating it to take this shape [死んだ (died)], and while using it as a noun would give the unnatural sounding [it had a death], the difference between both forms would be that the former is a [Verbal Core Word] while the latter would be a [Noun Core Word].
In the case of Japanese, grammar is more complex than the examples given here, but in the case of Emotional Song Pact, all of its conjugations use solely the easy-to-understand [Noun + Conjugation= Core Word] formula.
Therefore, its words can change form depending on how they are conjugated.
Well then, let's take an actual look at the conjugations.

Let's explain in a basic way the sample sentences shown previously:
A) [I think] is formed by [mou (thought) + i (normal present form)], so it'd be [mou-i (I think = verbal core word)].
B) [You became lighter] is formed by [kuu (light) + n (normal past form)], so it'd be [kuu-n (you became lighter = adjectival core word)].
C) [Pen] is written as [bou-ran], so written as a normal present form noun it would become [bou-ran-iz].
D) [Die] is written as [og (death) + uii (present imperative form)], so it'd become [og-uii (must die = I order you to die!)].
E) [syou-chee (save)] would become [syou-chee-n] when changed to past form, while [og-an-ea (so you won't die)] would be formed by [og (death)-an (negation)-ea (hypothetical future form)].
About the Emotion Words[]
The [Emotion Words] are the parts that were written in red in the previous sentences, and they receive this name because they are used to specify [an object that stirs strong feelings].
Emotion Words don't have any particular grammar rules for the formation of their sentences.
So basically they are very similar to Japanese: they both have a strong feeling of there not being a problem as long as the meaning of what one is saying can be accurately conveyed.
Emotion Words can be as short as a single word or as long as several sentences.
It should be very clear from the model sentences B to D shown before how single-word Emotion Words are, so they can be thought of as what one wants to say about the sentences following it.
Emotion Words as Sentences[]
When we say that Emotion Words can be sentences themselves, we mean they are a basic sentence pattern.
For example, let's take a look at model sentence E:

If we literally translate the sentence to English, we would get the following:

While this sentence has a Core Word in it that translates to [saved], Emotion Words mustn't necessarily have a Core Word as part of them, so it's fine to leave them out if it benefits the expression of feelings for the speaker.
About the Leading Words[]
Next, we'll discuss the Leading Words, as this grammatical element has several rules.
Please pay attention (to the part written in blue):
○○ = △△
It would be like this. This structure is what we ought to call the [Leading Word Definition].
In other words, we can think that the part following the equals sign (=) is the Leading Word (which would be the △ part of [○ is △]).
This equals sign (=) is called the [Leading Word Conjugation], and it serves to give the sentences the following form:
[Feelings Source] = [Feelings]
The [Feelings Source] serves to indicate [what someone is feeling (or thinking) about the situation expressed in this sentence].
As the [power of feelings] becomes energy in this world, this part of the sentence is an indispensable element for [what someone will invoke] upon saying these words.
Normally, this part is the one that contains sentences of the type expressing [me (and my current situation)]. As we saw in the example sentences A to G, they all had [ahih] preceding the equals sign, but that is because that is the way of saying [me when a human is Synchronized to a Genom].
Therefore, a more literal translation of the word would be rendered as [what we both, the me formed by [the Genom and human] that are Synchronized right now, think about this situation].
And in rare occasions, it's possible to use as the Feelings Source a subject that isn't oneself. For example, if we make a sentence [n=○○], it would translate to [what God thinks about this] (as [n] is the Emotional Song Pact word for God).
However, this is only used in very specific situations and thus isn't used by the people in everyday speech. Such situations would be cases in which you are speaking but aren't truly yourself, such as when being possessed by an external entity.
However, in situations in which you are saying [what God thinks about the situation] but you are still retaining your sense of self, the Leading Word for [God is] would be [ahih=○○].
As for the [Feelings], they are [what I'm thinking at the moment]. As examples of such feelings, we have [save me!], [I wish you'd die!] and [heal this sickness!].
[Feelings] possess a great amount of energy in this world, which is why they can be used as the source of magical power (and this is why these words receive the name of [Leading] Words: because they lead the feelings' power into manifesting as magic).
Again, the [Feelings] can be expressed in such a simple way as a single word, or with a complexity requiring several sentences.
And if there was anything you ought to have understood from these explanations, it is that the [Feelings] part of the Leading Words must always have a Core Word in their composition.
After all, [Core Words are the feelings' source]. This wasn't the case for the Emotion Words due to their nature of being the definer for a target that garners strong feelings, so it isn't necessary for them to include Core Words. However, since the Leading Words [are the source for the power of feelings], Core Words are indispensable for them to accomplish their function.
Leading Words Examples[]
It'll be easier to understand the previous explanation if we put out some examples. Here we will explain how some basic sentences are made up:
ahih=mou-i (I think)
[mou-i] is [to think].
In this case, it would translate to [(I and the one synchronized with me feels) I think].
ahih=kuu-n (Became lighter)
[kuu] is [light].
The [-n] at the end is the [n] verbal conjugation for normal past form.
Therefore, it'd translate to [became lighter]. In full, it would mean [(I and the one synchronized with me feels that) became lighter].
ahih=og-an-ea (So you won't die)
[og] means [death].
It has [-an] attached, which is the particle for negation and thus turns it into [don't die].
After they both, it also has [-ea]. [ea] is the conjugation for hypothetical future form, which is it ends meaning [so you won't die].
Therefore, its full translation would be [(I and the one synchronized with me feels) so you won't die].
ahih=bi-rei nu og-an-ea (So you won't die in a Burst)
A much more practical example. [bi-rei] means [Burst].
And in this way, we have gotten a full sentence inside the [Feelings].
The sentence would be [bi-rei (Burst)] [nu (inside)] [og-an (don't die)], so it would translate literally to [(I and the one synchronized with me feels) so you won't die in a Burst].
General Grammar Rules[]
There are a few special cases within the infinite sentences that can be formed by the Emotion Words and the Leading Words, and here we will explain them.
Interrogative Sentences[]
All interrogative sentences must start with the word [iuz] and end in an interrogation mark.

When such a sentence is made, the word [iaz] must be added at the very beginning of the Emotion Words part of the sentence.

Song Magic Sentences[]
So far, we have only explained the grammar mechanisms involved in using the Emotional Song Pact language for everyday speech.
Starting now, we will be explaining the actual processes used to invoke Song Magic through sentences made especially for this purpose.
Magic is invoked in this world through the process of converting [feelings] into [power].
More strictly speaking, it's a process in which life energy is converted into material energy.
And while [life energy] and the capacity of having explosive emotions that can be used as feelings for crafting magic are both traits characteristic of the humans to the Ra Cielans, the ones that actually carry out the [life energy to material energy conversion] are the Genoms.
Basically, the whole process for invoking Song Magic is as shown in the table below:

So we could explain this whole process as giving the spiritual waves (H-Waves) the place of the Yin, giving the material waves (D-Waves) the place of the Yang, and changing the Yin into the Yang.
So it's in this way that the magic for this world is formed by [the humans' feelings being stirred and the Genoms receiving these feelings to convert them into power].
Pact Words[]
We already discussed about the [Emotion Words] and [Leading Words] in the section that dealt with normal sentences, so now we will talk about a little enigma called the [Pact Words].
The Pact Words are basically an [energy exchange pact] between the human (host) and the Genom (or more strictly speaking, a personal information disclosure contract between both parties).
If we were to show how the Pact Words would look like in a normal conversation, they would be like this:
Genom: "Since your Yin Words are originating from Mental Depth Lv. 4, we will share the feelings located around that area."
Genom: "Hmmhmm, I've sympathized with your feelings! In that case, let's convert them into [Tz-Waves], and start materializing the phenomenon stated in your Yang Words!"
As for how such phrases are actually written, please look at the example below:

As you can see in the Emotional Song Pact writing shown above, a part of the Pact Word is covered by an overline (which is written in green for the romaji form), while the other part (written in pink in the romaji form) is underlined.
The overlined part is called the [Power Source], while the underlined one receives the name of [Hymmne Source].
Power Source[]
The [Power Source] consists of the Genom establishing communication with the waveforms existing in this world, and exerting control over them.
It must always start with an uppercase [N], which is then followed by a word representing one of the [Wu Xing] (five Chinese classical elements).

The currently constructed Song Magic can only choose one type of power to use in its composition from the ones shown in the table above.
Given the restriction of only one power type being used per Pact Word, if one wished to construct a very complex Song Magic that used multiple power types, it would have to be formed by multiple sentences, and it would also require life energy from a large number of humans to be executed.
For example, something simple like launching a [fireball] can be formed simply with the power type [fei (solar energy)], and thus it can be made in just a simple sentence.
However, something more complex like teleporting something away or making plants grow would require combining power types like [iyan], [mud] and [fei], and since each sentence can only contain a single Power Source, multiple sentences would be required in its construction.
Here are some basic examples about the uses each power type would have:

The [Hymmne Source] is an agreement on [from which mental stratum the Genoms will draw the feelings] when they use the power from their hosts.
The deeper the mental stratum, the closer we get to the subconscious, which also means that control proves more and more ineffective the deeper they go in. Naturally, the deepest layers also yield the greatest amount of energy per feelings units.
However, exposing the deepest layers of the mind to another person requires a considerable amount of courage, and doing so to allow a partner Genom to draw power from them is no exception to this rule.
So in practical terms, even if the feelings stirred originate at the Lv. 6 mental stratum, if the bond that person has with the Genom isn't strong enough yet that they would disclose that level's contents to them, the resulting energy will be far weaker, as they will only be able to draw energy from the lowest mental stratum their partners are willing to show them.
That is why that [mutually agreed stratum] is explicitly stated in the Hymmne Source declaration.
This declaration is formed by the following elements:

Vowels are called "the Six Directions", and are "the letters that represent the laws of this world".
When this language system was created, the people thought that the world was formed by these six directions.
Said directions are "East, West, South, North, Past and Future". While the four former should be familiar to everyone in our world as the cardinal points, they also have the Past and the Future added in. Each of these directions also have a meaning in energy, as it was thought that approaching a direction would allow that person to gain its corresponding energy.
